What language were these built in? I'm using http://www.liquid-technologies.com XML Editor to pipe data through to a web app which looks like it'll be doing a similar task. I'll be sure to check those out, cheers
Development Seed base their products on a customised Drupal CMS i.e. mostly a stock drupal release with range of plugins. Their site, developmentseed.org, details the tools they have built and how they were built. So as far as language goes, you're looking at good old PHP.
Drupal CMS offers several interesting advantages to developers, however they may not seem so "interesting " to end users. Some advantages include theme overrides, easiness of path-auto, flexibility offered by cck+views et cetera.
When it comes to various CMS, then perhaps the most user-friendly is WordPress. I say this because the end user requires minimal coding knowledge of PHP or any other computer language, in order to work with the system. Drupal definitely has its advantages for developers, but from "getting off the ground " point of view, it has some serious limitations.
Wordpress is good from my point of view, I used it to build my second website - it is simple to use, free and if you use the training (free again) on the Wordpress site it works. It is very friendly for search engines so get you good results, there are lots of additional modules you can use to add functionality to it.
I designed my first site in Dreamweaver which is fine is you read a starter book or just play and learn. I am not a programmer and could not imagine how to design from just code.
Need to take some more time to develop the Wordpress site but for now it works and gets my business found.

Basically, from my perspective, I'd say, if you are an experienced developer, particularly if you have any programming background at all, you need Drupal. If you are looking to hire a developer for your site, whatever site that might be, you need Drupal. If you are a newbie and want nothing more than a blog, then WordPress might be for you.
However, if you're willing to jump through the hurdle of learning the administrative back-end, then Drupal would likely serve you better in the long run. Particularly if you think you might want things like easy video embedding, or customizable content entry. And if you want a blog with multiple authors, or forums, or e-commerce (before you ask, I suggest Ubercart, and that comes from having used both that and e-Commerce, but read Diving into Drupal E-Commerce: An Ubercart vs. E-commerce Comparison first), or any kind of social network, then Drupal hands down is the one for you.
Hey guys, my new favourite is the vb4 CMS although it costs a hefty arm and leg. My close second is Joomla,I use Joomla on some of my other websites which I can't afford another vb license for, lol. Joomla has many many extensions and is very flexible and easy. Check out their homepage and extension pages if you have never heard of it. It's the best open source CMS software IMO.
Joomla is a great cms and very flexible but i find templating very difficult compared to blog based cms' such as wordpress. Over time i think wordpress will evolve into a CMS of its own and I for one have modified my own installation to be moe of a cms than a blogging platform.

This is another vote for WordPress. I think it is not only a great "plug-in and play" tool for blogging it can also, with a little knowhow, be turned into a fully-fledged site for a business or other types of site like membership, multilingual even e-commerce site. The "knowhow" can be picked up online as there are lots of free tutorials out there.
I have just tried using WP to write blog. Some of my friend use WP to show up their company's information like a website for them. Can use many tool on WP, include CMS to customize interface of webpage like we want. Maybe you can try once.
As a webhost, it's hard for me to put enough trust into a piece of software that is opensource, to run my business. I've been using DotCMS for a few months now on a couple of different client projects, and I can't rave enough about it. It's such a great system. It does everything I've ever seen a CMS do, plus more. The only downside is the install. Back when I was installing this, the software came wrapped inside an OS (Windows Server/Unix etc) which was a bit of a hastle, but now they've updated their install methods! This is truely a great CMS. Definitely worth a look.
Phase2 is very excited to be involved with Open Atrium, but we did not want to move too quickly to change something so many people use and love without first serving the community and providing maintenance to its underlying module stack. Earlier this year, we released support packages around Atrium that allow more users the ability to implement and use Atrium with the help of our team’s services.
Another vote for Wordpress - HOWEVER, you have to be careful what theme you use. Not all of the available themes are optimised for seo and some are just bloated with additional, unncecessary code. Wordpress is a great for setting up a web site very quickly.
