Spam comments
it's a waste of time reviewing updates to topics here as most updates seem to be no more than spam comments. Can this be sorted out? It gives a really poor impression.

I know what you mean. I think those were spam 'trackbacks' - or sites that linked to the forum posts. This is something that we fixed in yesterday's release.

Hey there, I have just joined this site and am very glad that the spam filters are doing their jobs. This is a good site but does need fluffing up a little due to the lack of content.
It can be interresting to put a capcha to post on the forum because many spammers use softwares ... :)
I don`t know how much of a good idea is it because captcha will just irritate regular people and there are paid services to use with "blackhat softwares" that can take care of captcha...
Why would typing in a simple captcha irritate people? And someone doesn't need blackhat software to get past captcha, they can type it in just as easily as anyone else can.
I utilize captchas and trick questions on my forum, but they are only effective against spamming BOTS, not real humans.
I think that's the issue. Since this website has so many links to it, it really needs some sort of strong protection from spam, and yes this will include humans. It's very difficult - basically a decent team of people is needed for it to be usable!
I would try adding a flood control, basically making sure that no posts can be made 10 seconds after eachother, and also set up a captcha although with user level permissions. By this I mean make a captcha mandatory for those with less than 50 posts.
I see much discussion about how to deal with spammers but very little to describe exactly what a spammer is. It seems that depending upon which particular area of the internet you are involved in the definition of a spammer varies greatly. Our company takes the approach of offering information to the end user completely free of charge but monetise what ever content we have with advertising and banners. This is viewed by many to be "spamming" but I find it difficult to see a way to give users the level of information they want without a cost being incurred somewhere - is it more "spammish" to charge directly for access to data than to give it for free in the hope that people will go on to buy other services that you promote?
This is an area that I'm very passionate about, we live in times of ever increasing unemployment and rising costs, simply applying the label "spammer" to any organisation that attempts to be commercially viable is not going to help turn around the country's problems. Looking at most of the apps that are being developed using data.gov data sources I think it would be difficult to find one that was not described by someone as being "spam"
So, now, how do you get rid of the spammers???

why not turn on your spam filter setting or ask for some details that you think can’t be filled up by spammer (sure they won’t pay attention and just leave)…;)
I just wonder how simon concluded that the comments here are mostly spam and its a waste of time to read it. Please remember not all visitors here are smart and inteligent enough like you. If that's the only thing they can write or say here then we cant consider them as spam.
Some of them are sufficiently intelligent to include a link to the website of the company they represent - not too much doubt about them.
To be honest the forum seems to be going through a slow death process. I see the Ideas section has just been chopped, perhaps for that reason, but I have not yet found anything on the site which gives an explanation.
Why is there such apathy now? Enthusing the wider user community was one of a number of topics that the consultation did not seem to address. Perhaps the site's concentration on the minutiae of government activities is turning serious analysts off.

for info, the rss feed is still more spam than anything else. This needs to be sorted out.
If you use WordPress, you can sort it out with a plugin, which stops any pingbacks and that can eliminate any spam comments created by bots.
Yes, I use WordPress and it has many many plugins for tackling spam. Things like honeypot fields on forms, minimum length comments, banned IPs, human verification questions etc etc. This would get rid of 90% of the spam automatically. The rest should be manually audited by the webmaster.
Perhaps only people with UK IP address should be able to comment?!
Read spam comments really waste our time, but many site can sort spam comments automaticly now.

Is if just me, or have the moderators effectively given this site up for lost? Is there anyone other than the spammers left?
Yeah, there's a woeful lack of effective moderation. I assume that's one of the main reasons these forums are used so little; it's increasingly difficult even to pick out new comments and threads because they are buried under spam comments.
Spot on, Owen. It may seem oot of line with the spirit of openness, but there are idiots on here taking advantage of that openness to plug goodness knows what. Time for pre-moderation, perhaps, at least until an individual has submitted several non-abusing posts?
To be honest, I thought the Forum and the site generally started to deteriorate when the obsession with transparency started to dominate the agenda, and in particular the home page, as serious analysts may have started to wonder why they were bothering. The spam problem is now easily the more destructive of the two, but the combination is proving corrosive.
I'm not a fan of pre-moderation myself, as I think it tends to slow down or inhibit discussions. (OK, not likely to be a problem at the current level of activity in these forums, but I'm thinking ahead.)
I think it would be sufficient just to have a moderator check the forums several times a day and sweep out the spam postings. And there should be a rule that everyone has to set up a profile before posting, which would at least add a hurdle for spammers.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the Cabinet Office is neglecting data.gov.uk as a whole because it perceives it as an initiative of the previous Government. I assume there is a staffing problem -- either not enough resource or they've lost the people who were originally engaged with it.
Perhaps the data.gov.uk team could open up the moderator role to suitably vetted volunteers? Many online communities operate their forums on that basis.
I'm not a fan of pre-modding either, but the alternative seems to be the discussions getting strangled by a mass of weeds. Most of the spam is from people with user names (does that imply a profile?), so I presume they are doing a one-off hit and run before adopting another user name.
It would be nice to think that an appeal to their better nature might work!
If I had been working on the original data.gov.uk I think I would have got disillusioned and looked for another job. I don't think data.gov.uk as a whole is being ignored but the bits which can be used to produce cherry picked soundbites on the awfulness of the public sector are the ones with the highest profile. I hope that does not reflect the way actual work on data has gone. Holding the public sector to account is important but not really what I am interested in, though I may be a minority of one.

What about a spam button on each comment - if say 5 people (with differnt IP addresses) hit it then the post is automatically removed.
That would get around a lack of moderation...
This is a good idea, but it is not that difficult for someone to get on 5 different IP addresses to flag some "legit" comment that person does not agree with. This is an interesting debate, because if someone puts wow gold or some other link in their comments and someone wants to flag it, what should be done? It goes to a moderator after 5 flags? Then gets a greenlist and cannot be flagged again? Then someone has to do the work of moderating. Maybe it would be better to hide the comment or strip it of URL's if its flagged, then the spam post was not worth it.
