Lifetime meta data for datasets

Hi,

First let me say that this site is a brilliant idea. It will grow I am sure to be a central location for our countries owned data. That will enable us to save time and money when needing to create data rich applications.

My question is one of adding metadata to the dataset to show how long it is being maintained and the reliability of the source.

For example I looked at https://www.data.gov.uk/dataset/young_people_and_sport and followed the link to the data http://www.statistics.gov.uk/hub/id/119-39849 and got "Page not found"

Now this type of thing is bound to happen, but could the site poll the link every week or so to show that it is still active. You could then email the source controller to tell them that the dataset is down.

You could also get feedback from people who have/are using the dataset as to it's speed and reliability. This would really help as when we create connections we will know that we need to cache the data or just connect.

Again, great job and keep going!

Tony

maybe is hard to

keep meta data for lifetime

The publication can be accessed directly via

http://www.dcalni.gov.uk/ypbas_2007_sport_final.pdf ...

but I realise that you are making a more general point.

What we have at the moment is data.gov.uk linking to the National Statistics publication hub which in turn links to the relevant departmental website, either going direct to the subject page or to a landing page.  All rather unwieldy but there are reasons.  Going via the NS hub is intended to strengthen the image of National Statistics, which have to meet certain standards of handling etc. that are not obligatory for other datasets.  Announcing a release date in advance and restricting pre-release access as far as possible are good examples.  But that does mean that it is not obvious where the responsibility for the broken link lies.  I had the same problem trying to access the release direct from the NS publication hub, so the problem appears to be that the link on there is wrong.  It looks as if it is meant to go to a general research and statistics page

http://www.dcalni.gov.uk/index/quick-links/research_and_statistics.htm

but the relevant page is now

http://www.dcalni.gov.uk/index/quick-links/research_and_statistics-3.htm

Shouldn't happen but it looks as if someone has renamed the landing page without realising the knock-on implications.
