MaPit is mySociety's database and web service that maps postcodes and points to current or past administrative area information and polygons for all the United Kingdom. It has been rewritten from the ground up in GeoDjango and PostGIS, providing us with a large array of improvements including speed, a lovely admin interface, and much easier updating. Great stuff, but ...
... how about making your aggregated postcode dataset available in a form that would be usable by other developers?
I would like to implement a postcode to Westminster constituency lookup in a web app. Of course I could use the MaPit or They Work For You API web services that you generously make available, but then I'm using your bandwidth / CPU time and also introducing latency and an additional potential point of failure by making my app dependent HTTP requests made to your server(s).
I realise that I could build the required data set myself from the sources on your data mirror and your source code, but I'm not familiar with either Python or GIS stuff. Like many bog-standard web developers I am, however, comfortable with SQL RDBMS (specifically MySQL) and am principally interested in postcode to admin area lookups. So, what would be perfect for me would be data files that I could import into a series of related tables; a postcode table related to a series of tables holding admin area names.
Might you consider doing this (presuming the source data licences allow for it)?
