Title

A time-series of strains in response to wind measured on 19 trees in Danum Valley, Malaysia

Abstract

Strain data measured on the trunks of 19 trees in the Danum Valley, Malaysia. It also contains wind speed data measured using anemometers attached to emergent trees nearby. This data can be used to extract the fundamental swaying frequencies of these trees, and to quantify the relationship between wind speed and bending strain and so estimate wind damage risk. This data would be useful for anyone studying the interaction between wind and trees. The tallest tree in this data set is approximately 51 m tall. Lineage

This data was collected from October 2016 to April 2017 in Danum Valley, Malaysia. The data was initially saved on Campbell data loggers and Raspberry Pis and then transferred to a laptop. The individual data files were consolidated into a single file per data logger and this raw data is provided in the repository. This raw data was calibrated and filtered and the pairs of strain gauges combined into a single per tree bending strain signal. This processed data is also provided in the repository. No processing was necessary for the wind data and this is provided in its raw form.
