Alternative title(s)

Abstract

This British Geological Survey (BGS) marine geophysical survey took place in July 2002 in the northern Rockall Trough and the northern end of Hatton Bank on board the RRS James Clark Ross (Cruise JR76). The purpose of the survey was 1) to in fill gaps in the existing seismic data coverage in order to address specific geological problems; 2) Identify windows in the Palaeogene lavas. Seafloor bathymetry data was collected using a Kongsberg-Simrad EM120 multibeam system. Subsurface seismic data were collected using an Airgun and Sparker, these data are archived by BGS and are available for download. Gravitational field, Magnetic field data were also collected. Most of the data were recorded digitally, and paper records were also generated. These data are archived by BGS. Technical details of the survey are contained in BGS Internal Report IR/02/152 (http://nora.nerc.ac.uk/id/eprint/528019). Lineage

Geophysical equipment types used included: Airgun/Sleeve Gun, Echo Sounder, Gravimeter, Magnetometer and Sparker. The survey was undertaken by British Geological Survey. Airgun System: Source: An array of 5 x 40 cu inch Bolt 600B airguns with waveshape kits and time break solenoids. Hydrophone: A two-channel Geomechanique hydrophone summed to give a single channel 30m active length. Recording: A CODA DA200, software version 2.2.16.4 (2002) four-channel digital recording and processing system was utilised to record the raw data. The data were recorded on Exabyte tape in CODA format with a sampling interval of 0.2 msec, record length of 4 seconds and bandpass filter of 25-500 Hz. Online processing: the CODA system was also used to process the data on-line and produce a real time hard copy output on a Waverley 3710 thermal printer. Processes applied were time varied gain (TVG), time varied filtering (TVF) and trace mixing and, in extremely large amplitude sea swell situations, a swell filter. Both TVG and TVF were applied from the sea bed, which was tracked automatically. A 1.4sec record length was used for the on-line hard copy, with a delay adjusted to give an optimum record for the water depth. For more detailed information on the acquisition equipment and data collection techniques, operational standards, data processing methods and quality control procedures used on this survey see the Report of Survey/Cruise Report and associated documentation where available. The information available may vary depending on the age of the survey. Data are checked and loaded to the BGS Coastal and Marine data management system following BGS marine data management procedures.
