Coastal Physiographic Features - Coastal Lagoons
This shapefile shows the distribution of the Annex I habitat, coastal lagoons around the UK. Coastal lagoons are areas of shallow, coastal salt water, wholly or partially separated from the sea by sandbanks, shingle or, less frequently, rocks. Lagoons show a wide range of geographical and ecological variation; five main sub-types have been identified in the UK, on the basis of their physiography, as meeting the definition of the Annex I habitat type. The five sub-types are: Isolated lagoons, Percolation lagoons, Silled lagoons, Sluiced lagoons, and Lagoonal inlets. The original Coastal Lagoons shapefile contained lagoons that were extracted from UKSeaMap (Coastal Physiographic features) and combined with the original to create a new updated Coastal Lagoon layer to be used for Article 17 reporting 2013.This updated shapefile was sent to Country Agencies (CAs) to review and update where necessary. The four CA updated coastal lagoon shapefiles were then merged to create a UK level coastal lagoon shapefile.
